When it comes to predicting the early favorites for next season, the usual approach is to look at which teams appear to be coming back loaded with talent and ended the season playing well. Syracuse seemed to fit that bill.

They were poised to bring back their entire starting line-up, one of their top recruits from last year -- Mookie Jones -- was injured so he will be able to help, plus another top-20 recruiting class. Of course that depended on no one leaving early. With the encouragement of coach Jim Boeheim, point guard Jonny Flynn will be checking his status in the NBA draft -- without hiring an agent. Paul Harris and Eric Devendorf, at first blush, appear to just be leaving.

It's been a year since the allegations broke of former USC basketball star O.J. Mayo getting a little something on the side from runners for an agent. And it has been over three years since the allegations against former USC football star Reggie Bush regarding some incompetent wannabe marketing agents fronting a lot of money and a house to Bush and his family.

Neither investigation has gone anywhere with respect to USC. Yet both are still open investigations by the NCAA. So for whatever reason, the NCAA is combining the investigations into one single investigation into USC's athletic department.

It has really been a question of if, not when, some of the Memphis commitments would choose to follow coach John Calipari to Kentucky. DeMarcus Cousins was the most likely to do so first, since he has not yet signed a National Letter of Intent (LOI) with Memphis. His commitment was only verbal, so there was not even a formality of having to ask Memphis to release him from the LOI.

Sure enough, Cousins made the decision to go to Kentucky. He is likely to be only the first.

Xavier Henry did sign a LOI with Memphis, but has just received his release. He is not ruling out sticking with Memphis since his older brother will be eligible to play for the Tigers in 2009. He is, however, now deciding between Memphis, Kansas and Kentucky.

Pitt sophomore forward, DeJuan Blair was at the very least going to test the NBA draft waters. Most mock drafts have Blair being drafted mid-way in the first round despite being a 6-7 power forward.

Blair has decided that he will not even pretend that there is a chance that he will come back to Pitt. He has retained an attorney to help him, though he has not hired an NBA-certified agent as of yet. The hiring of an attorney, though, means that Blair has surrendered his remaining eligibility. He has a press conference scheduled for later this afternoon to make an official statement.

Blake Griffin has been picking up hardware for the past few weeks (the Naismith, AP and CBS Awards spring immediately to mind) and, considering that he announced his decision Tuesday to enter the NBA Draft, it's safe to say he's going to be getting a pretty substantial pay raise as well.

Griffin called choice a "tough decision," but the reality is grounded closer in what Oklahoma Jeff Capel meant when he called the decision a "no brainer."

Central Florida's basketball program recently landed two Chicago-area players for next year's recruiting class -- one of whom has very ample basketball bloodlines. Marcus Jordan -- yes, that Jordan's son -- and Nik Garcia both orally committed to play for the Knights on Monday.

Jordan, the second son of Michael Jordan, helped his team win a State championship in March, and he grew up playing club basketball with Garcia. Jordan will join former teammate, A.J. Rompza, who made Conference USA's all-freshman team this past season, so they'll enter with some familiarity.

DETROIT -- He's overrated. He's awkward. He will be a role player, at best, in the NBA. He cost himself lots of money by coming back to college this year. He's credited as working harder than everyone else, and that's entirely unfair to everyone else, maybe even with a racial hint to it.

I'm pretty sure I still feel all of those things about Tyler Hansbrough, who has touched a nerve to half of college basketball's fans, rubbed it raw. Also, national analysts just never stop forcing him down our throats.

There's no real secret as to what did in Michigan State in the NCAA championship game. Yes, there was the superior talent on North Carolina. The Tar Heels shot really effectively in the first half. North Carolina could actually make free throws. The issue for Michigan State, though, was their inability to hold onto the ball.

The Spartans turned the ball over 21 times in the game. The poor ball-handling made it easier for North Carolina to go on runs big runs and stopped Michigan State attempts to come back cold.

John Calipari may have to start his Kentucky career in search of a new leading scorer.

Kentucky guard Jodie Meeks, who paced the Wildcats with 23.7 points per game, will find out his standing in the NBA draft. He's not going to hire an agent, according to the story, but he will go through the draft process. Meeks was an All-American this year, and along with forward Patrick Patterson, was most of Kentucky's offense this past season.

Right now, the mock drafts have him as a second round pick, at best. Still, between Calipari taking over at Kentucky and being a junior, Meeks has every reason to find out what his options are with the NBA. And if not, he still can come back for his senior year with the knowledge of what he needs to improve. He would be a fool not to find out his status.

This certainly wasn't the same Michigan State team we watched the past two weekends. But it was the same North Carolina team we all thought, back in November, was the best team in the country by a mile.

If ever a national championship game felt like a coronation, it was 2009.

There were reasons, over the past three months, to doubt these Tar Heels. There was Ty Lawson's bum toe. There was that weird and inexplicable loss to Boston College. There were memories of the way they went out, too soon, in the tournament the past two years. The 2007 collapse against Georgetown. The 2008 pasting by Kansas.

Shocking, right? Blake Griffin has been the dominant player in college basketball this year and he's won just about every individual award given. Now he can add the Naismith Award to the list.

Really, it never was any question. No player in college has been better this season than Griffin, the likely No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft. Even when he lost, he was spectacular. In the Sooners' final game of the season against North Carolina in the Elite Eight, Griffin scored 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, thoroughly outplaying Tyler Hansbrough in a matchup of player of the year winners.

Magic Johnson and Larry BirdDETROIT -- Magic is still smiling and Larry is still, well, not. Meanwhile, Michael can't believe he won't be flying anymore.

In life, you may never get a second chance to make a first impression.

But if you bomb it as badly as Michigan State did in its 98-63 loss to North Carolina in December that was godawful embarrassing even by the standards of a stadium that hosts the Lions, you'll get months, if not a lifetime, to explain exactly what went wrong.

And if you're the Spartans, you get a second chance to make it right.

At least after you explain. And explain. And explain.

John Wooden is, without question, one of the greatest college basketball coaches to ever set foot on the hardwood. A (seriously) spry 96 years old, Coach Wooden was kind of enough to take some time out of his Championship Monday to speak with FanHouse. From his upcoming Gatorade commercial (it debuts tonight, you can get a sneak preview of it here), to how he feels about the money and attention that college coaches receive, to who he has pegged to win Monday night's big game, Coach Wooden had plenty to say.
