During halftime of the thrilling Michigan State vs. Connecticut national semifinal, Chevrolet and CBS presented their awards for player of the year and coach of the year. To no one's surprise, Blake Griffin of Oklahoma took the honors from the player side, while Kansas' Bill Self won the coaching award. Griffin, only a sophomore, was a monster for the Sooners this season. He averaged 22.7 points and 14.7 rebounds a game while shooting an unreal 65 percent from the field. He took the Sooners to the Elite Eight before losing to a much deeper North Carolina team.
Self won the national championship last season at Kansas, but he lost his entire starting lineup afterward. He still managed to improve the 2008-2009 version over the course of the season, garnering a three seed and taking the 27-8 Jayhawks to the Sweet 16.
Of note, Griffin appeared almost catatonic (either that or indifferent) though I guess that doesn't stray much from his on-court demeanor. He's a good guy, so I doubt he didn't care about the award. Then again, this wasn't a surprise, so maybe he's been more looking forward to accepting the Naismith and Wooden awards?
Another interesting note, both award winners came from the same conference. Congratulations Big 12, Oklahoma, Kansas, Griffin and Self. A very deserving duo.
