Morgan State forward Ameer Ali apparently watched too many replays of Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair grabbing a rebound and taking Hasheem Thabeet right over his back. Ali, however, did not have the ball; Oklahoma was off and running with it. Ali did, however, have Blake Griffin in the vicinity, so he decided to make a name for himself by showing he could flip Griffin in a bush-league move that got him ejected. (Video after the jump.)

Here's a suggestion: Don't just give him a useless one-game suspension-- throw him out of the league! No more scholarship, no more stipends, no more nothing. This bush league move could have seriously injured a potential NBA great, and ruined HIS career. Let the punishment fit the crime: if he wants to play "street ball", then let him play it on the street!

I was at that game..sad to say, when they introduced the players from Morgan State, their pictures all looked like mug shots w/o the numbers, it was like they tried to come up with the toughest guy picture they could. Thought they were going to play street ball. Oklahoma players all had nice shirts and ties on, very respectful looking. I am not an OK fan, but was impressed with how they conducted themselves and at least their intro pics were nice. The best part of Morgan St. was their band...better than all the others for the day.

Blake handled the situation very well. I was rather impressed. He has been raised as a responsible young man. His parents and his high school should be very proud. He just got up and walked away. Some players would have wanted to get even, but Blake knew the smart way to handle it. God Bless him and keep him without injury.

He should have been arrested for assault. He could have at least caused him to be paralyzed. There is no way he should be allowed to play at least until next season. Let him have some time to understand the consequences of what he did.

The action was and is a reflection on coaches who demand "winning" at all costs. There are ways to compete that require tough play, but do not involve thuggary. Additionally, basketball officiating at all levels has become such a joke that more often than not, games are decided by the referee's calls - ranging from 2 quick fouls on a star player, or game-long non-calls on thugs. The disparity between what is a foul for a guard, and a foul for a "big" is laughable. If a guard handchecks and is called for a foul, why is a center/forward not called for a forearm in the back? Or a hammerlock? Or just a plain old push? The rules are different. And if you happen to be a big man star, the referees simply turn their backs and expect the star to play through it, but if the star touches someone, immediate fouls are called. Time to clean up the coaching and the officiating in all levels of basketball - it will be a better game!
